Some are elegant and sophisticated, others are packed with nightlife, while a few are perfect if sightseeing is your top priority. The best area to stay in Buenos Aires depends largely on what you’re looking for.
Recoleta is my top choice for first-time visitors, thanks to its central location, elegant atmosphere, and excellent selection of restaurants, shops, and hotels.
Palermo is ideal if you prefer a lively neighborhood with great nightlife, restaurants, and cafés, while Puerto Madero offers a more modern and upscale setting.
Other good options include San Telmo, especially if you want a more historic and bohemian atmosphere, and Retiro, which is convenient for sightseeing and transport.

1. Recoleta, the Best Area to Stay in Buenos Aires
If you’re visiting Buenos Aires for the first time, Recoleta is probably the neighborhood I’d recommend most. It’s elegant, safe, centrally located, and full of beautiful architecture that gives the city its famous Parisian reputation.
French immigrants settled here during the 19th century, and many of the streets, mansions, and apartment buildings still reflect that influence today. Walking around Recoleta often feels more like strolling through a European capital than a South American city.
This is one of Buenos Aires’ most upscale neighborhoods. Luxury hotels, stylish cafés, fine dining restaurants, designer boutiques, and exclusive shopping streets are everywhere, yet the area never feels pretentious.
Many of the city’s top attractions are within walking distance. You can visit the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Recoleta Cultural Centre, the National Library, and the famous Recoleta Cemetery, where some of Argentina’s most important historical figures are buried.
Another place you shouldn’t miss is El Ateneo Grand Splendid. Housed inside a beautifully restored theatre, it’s widely considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world and is worth visiting even if you don’t buy a single book.
Shopping is another reason many visitors choose Recoleta. Alongside luxury boutiques, you’ll find plenty of shopping arcades and independent stores selling everything from fashion to jewellery.
Getting around couldn’t be easier. Recoleta borders the historic centre and is well connected by public transport, with Underground Lines D and H providing quick access to the rest of the city.
The neighborhood also comes alive after dark. Dinner rarely starts before 9:30 or 10 p.m., and you’ll find everything from cosy wine bars and traditional Argentine restaurants to cocktail lounges, breweries, and lively clubs.
Safety is another big plus. While you should always take normal precautions, as you would in any large city, Recoleta is generally considered one of the safest areas to stay in Buenos Aires, with plenty of taxis available at all hours.

2. Microcentro, the Best Area for Sightseeing
If your plan is to spend most of your time exploring Buenos Aires’ main landmarks, Microcentro is one of the most convenient places to stay.
This is the city’s financial and administrative heart. During the day, the streets are packed with office workers, commuters, and tourists visiting some of Buenos Aires’ most famous attractions.
You’ll be within walking distance of the Casa Rosada, Plaza de Mayo, the Metropolitan Cathedral, San Ignacio Church, and several important museums. It’s hard to find a more central location.
The architecture is another highlight. Elegant early 20th-century buildings sit alongside modern skyscrapers, giving the district a distinctly European feel. Locals even refer to the area as La City because of its financial importance.
If shopping is on your itinerary, don’t miss Florida Street. It’s one of Buenos Aires’ busiest pedestrian streets and home to Galerías Pacífico, arguably the city’s most beautiful shopping centre thanks to its architecture and painted ceilings.
Upstairs you’ll also find the Borges Cultural Centre, which regularly hosts art exhibitions and cultural events.
Public transport is excellent. Underground Lines A, C, and E all pass through the area, making it easy to reach almost every corner of Buenos Aires.
One thing worth knowing is that some bus routes don’t enter Microcentro during weekday business hours due to traffic restrictions. Even so, plenty of buses stop along the surrounding avenues.
During the day, the neighborhood is lively and full of energy. At lunchtime you’ll find countless cafés, traditional restaurants, bakeries, and inexpensive places serving excellent set menus.
The atmosphere changes completely after office hours. Once the workers leave, many streets become surprisingly quiet. While it’s not an unsafe area, I wouldn’t recommend wandering around late at night unless you know where you’re going.

What makes Retiro especially appealing is its excellent location. Sitting between Recoleta and Microcentro, it is a smart choice if you want to be close to both areas without paying the higher prices of some of the most exclusive neighborhoods.
Historically, Retiro was the arrival point for millions of European immigrants escaping the Second World War. Today, it is a fascinating area to explore, with attractions such as the former Immigrants’ Hotel, now a public museum, San Martín Square, the Monumental Tower, and the stunning Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament.
For me, Retiro’s biggest advantage is transportation. The neighborhood is home to Buenos Aires’ main long-distance bus terminal, making it extremely convenient if you’re planning trips outside the city.
It is also where you’ll find Buenos Aires’ main port, where large cargo ships arrive and depart every day. Another interesting detail is that ferries to Uruguay leave from here, making it a practical base for a side trip across the Río de la Plata.

Walking around here is one of my favorite things to do in Buenos Aires. The streets are filled with artists, antique shops, cafés, and small galleries, giving the area a creative energy that you won’t find everywhere else in the city.
The heart of the neighborhood is Plaza Dorrego, a lively square surrounded by restaurants, bars, and cafés. Every Sunday, it hosts the famous San Telmo Market, where you can browse antiques, handmade crafts, and local artwork.
One of the neighborhood’s most photographed spots is Casa Mínima, the narrowest house in Buenos Aires. Its tiny 2.5-metre-wide façade makes it a fun stop while exploring the area on foot.
Another unique attraction is the statue of Mafalda, the beloved Argentine comic character sitting on a bench in the middle of the street. Nearby, you’ll also find statues of other famous characters such as Clemente, Gaturro, and Isidoro.
San Telmo is also one of the best neighborhoods in Buenos Aires for nightlife. Besides its famous tango shows, you’ll find venues offering live jazz, Latin rock, theatre performances, and plenty of bars to enjoy after dark.
Despite its lively atmosphere, San Telmo remains a welcoming neighborhood with a strong community feeling. Its combination of history, culture, and nightlife makes it one of my favorite areas to stay in Buenos Aires.
Getting around is easy too. The neighborhood is connected to the rest of the city by bus and Underground Line C.

Monserrat is one of the most fascinating areas to explore on foot. Every street seems to tell a story, with grand historic buildings, important landmarks, and some of the city’s most significant political and cultural sites.

Monserrat has a different atmosphere depending on the time of day. During working hours, government buildings and businesses create a lively buzz, but once evening arrives, the streets become much quieter.
Although it is not the busiest neighborhood at night, you’ll still find some excellent local bars nearby serving cocktails, pasta dishes, and traditional Argentine grilled meats.
Getting around is simple, with plenty of options including buses, coaches, and the metro. One of the attractions that continues to bring visitors here is the Monument to Iguazú Falls.

This striking entrance marks the beginning of Buenos Aires’ Chinatown, created by Asian immigrants who settled in the area during the early 1980s.
Walking through the arch, you’ll discover much more than Asian restaurants. The area is also home to a Buddhist temple and numerous shops selling products from across Asia, making it one of Belgrano’s main tourist attractions.
