In normal traffic conditions, the journey takes around 15 minutes by car. If you’re heading to Miami Beach, expect a trip of approximately 25 minutes, as the beach is located around 20 km (12.5 miles) from the airport.
I’ve visited Miami several times, and one thing I like a lot of this city is how well connected the airport is. Whether you’re travelling on a budget or looking for the most comfortable option, you’ll find plenty of ways to reach Downtown Miami or Miami Beach without any hassle.
The airport is divided into three terminals: the North Terminal, Central Terminal, and South Terminal.
Getting around the airport is easy thanks to the MIA Mover, a free automated train that connects all terminals with the Miami Intermodal Center. Trains operate every 5 minutes, so you rarely have to wait long.
There are several ways to travel from Miami Airport to either Downtown Miami or Miami Beach. You can choose between the Metrorail, Metrobus, taxis, ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft, private transfers, or a rental car.
If you’re travelling light and want to save money, I usually recommend public transportation. On the other hand, if you’re arriving late at night, travelling with children, or carrying a lot of luggage, a taxi or private transfer may be worth the extra cost.
Before taking public transportation or collecting a rental car, you’ll first need to head to the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC).
Fortunately, getting there couldn’t be easier. Simply follow the signs to the MIA Mover, which takes passengers from the terminals directly to the transportation hub free of charge.
The Miami Intermodal Center is where you’ll find access to the Metrorail, Metrobus, Tri-Rail, and the airport’s car rental center. If you’ve booked a rental vehicle, this is where you’ll collect it.

How to Get from Miami Airport to Miami Beach and Downtown Miami
1. Metrorail, The Fastest and Cheapest Way to Get from Miami Airport to Downtown Miami (It Does Not Reach Miami Beach)
Together with the bus, the Metrorail is one of the most affordable ways to get around Miami using public transportation.
To take the metro from Miami Airport, you’ll first need to travel to the Miami Intermodal Center using the free MIA Mover. Once you arrive, simply follow the signs to the Metrorail platform.
Miami currently operates two metro lines: the Orange Line and the Green Line. The Orange Line serves Miami International Airport and is the line you’ll need if you’re heading to Downtown Miami.
The Orange Line also connects with the Green Line, which serves other parts of the city, including areas north of Downtown.
One important thing to remember is that the metro does not reach Miami Beach, so you’ll need to use another transportation option if that’s your final destination.
The journey from Miami Airport to Downtown Miami, including stations such as Government Center and Overtown, takes approximately 30 minutes. Trains run every 15 minutes during peak hours and every 30 minutes during quieter periods and on weekends.
If you’re planning to explore the city centre, I recommend getting off at Government Center Station or Brickell Station. Both provide easy access to the Metromover, a free elevated transit system that loops around Downtown Miami and allows you to visit many of the area’s main attractions without spending any extra money.
While it may not always be the fastest transportation option, it is certainly the cheapest way to travel from the airport to Downtown Miami. A one-way ticket costs just $2.25 (approximately €1.93), making it an excellent choice for travellers on a budget.
Tickets can be purchased directly at the station or through the GO Miami-Dade Transit mobile app. Another convenient option is to use an Easy Card, a rechargeable transit card that can be used on both Metrobus and Metrorail services throughout the city.
The Metrorail operates daily from 5:00 a.m. until approximately midnight.

Frequency: Every 15–30 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends.

2. Bus, The Best Way to Get from Miami Airport to Miami Beach
If your final destination is Miami Beach, taking the bus is one of the best-value options available from Miami Airport.
Several bus routes depart from the airport and stop at key locations throughout the city, including Miami Beach. In fact, since the metro doesn’t reach the beach, the bus is often the most practical public transportation option for travellers looking to save money.
One thing worth keeping in mind is that travel times depend heavily on traffic conditions. During busy periods, journeys can take longer than expected.
Depending on your destination, you can choose between the express service, which travels directly to Miami Beach, or one of the regular Metrobus routes.
2.1 Miami Beach Airport Express (Route 150)
Just like when taking the metro, you’ll first need to ride the free MIA Mover from the airport terminals to the Miami Intermodal Center.
Once you arrive at the transportation hub, you’ll find several bus routes departing from the station. The fastest and most convenient option for reaching Miami Beach is the Miami Beach Airport Express (Route 150).
This route takes approximately 1 hour to reach South Beach, although journey times can vary depending on traffic conditions.
Compared to a taxi or private transfer, it’s certainly not the fastest way to get to Miami Beach. However, it is a comfortable, easy, and highly budget-friendly option, especially considering that the metro doesn’t serve Miami Beach.
The Miami Beach Airport Express operates daily from 5:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. A one-way ticket costs just $2.25.
You can pay using an Easy Card or an Easy Ticket, both of which are available at the airport.
Buses depart every 30 minutes from the Miami Intermodal Center and make several stops throughout the city before arriving in South Beach. If needed, you can also get off at any of the Metrobus stops located in Downtown Miami.
One feature I particularly like about this route is that the buses are equipped with luggage racks, making it much easier to travel with suitcases than on many other airport bus services.
Price: $2.25 one-way.

Journey time: Approximately 1 hour from Miami Airport to Miami Beach.

2.2 Other Metrobus Routes
In addition to the Airport Express service, Metrobus operates several other routes from the Miami Intermodal Center that provide connections to areas near Downtown Miami.
Metrobus services operate from 6:00 a.m. until 11:40 p.m., with buses running approximately every 20 minutes, depending on the route.
All Metrobus vehicles are designed to accommodate passengers travelling with luggage, so carrying multiple suitcases shouldn’t be a problem.
The fare is exactly the same as the Miami Beach Airport Express: just $2.25 for a one-way journey.
Routes 7, 37, 42, and 57 connect Miami International Airport with Downtown Miami. Depending on traffic, the journey takes approximately 50 minutes.
If you’re planning a shopping trip, the airport also offers Route 338 Weekend Express, which provides direct service to the popular Dolphin Mall.

3. Taxi: The Most Convenient Way to Travel from Miami Airport to Downtown or Miami Beach
If you prefer to skip public transportation and head straight to your hotel without any stops or transfers, taking a taxi is one of the most convenient and straightforward options available at Miami International Airport.
Taxis are available 24 hours a day directly outside the terminals, so you won’t have any issues finding one regardless of your arrival time.
From my experience, the ride from Miami Airport to Downtown Miami is quite quick under normal traffic conditions, taking around 15 minutes. However, during rush hour or heavy congestion, it can easily extend to around 30 minutes.
Fares are regulated and based on official rates, which helps avoid surprises. A typical journey to Downtown Miami costs around $27, including the airport surcharge. If you’re heading to Miami Beach, expect to pay approximately $37.
While taxis are more expensive than public transport, they remain a solid option if you’re travelling with luggage, arriving late at night, or simply want a hassle-free transfer straight to your accommodation.

With this service, your driver will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall, ready to take you directly to your accommodation without any waiting time or additional stops. It’s particularly convenient after a long flight or if you’re travelling with family or a group.
The journey from Miami Airport to Downtown Miami takes approximately 15 minutes, while reaching Miami Beach usually takes around 25 minutes, depending on traffic.
Private transfers are more expensive than taxis, but they offer a noticeably higher level of comfort and peace of mind. Vehicles are typically high-end, and the price is fixed, meaning there are no hidden charges or surprises at the end of your trip.
Prices start at around $74 for a vehicle accommodating up to 3 passengers, while larger vehicles for up to 6 passengers cost approximately $82 per trip.
One thing I find particularly useful is that you can make your reservation at least 24 hours in advance via the website or app. You can also request additional services such as baby seats, wheelchair accessibility, or other special requirements during the booking process.

5. Car Rental: The Best Option to Get Around Freely in Miami
If you’re looking for maximum flexibility during your stay in Miami, or planning to explore other parts of Florida beyond the city, renting a car is by far the most convenient option.
Having your own vehicle gives you complete freedom to travel at your own pace, carry as much luggage as you need, and move comfortably between destinations without relying on public transport schedules.
At Miami International Airport, you’ll find the main car rental companies located next to the Central Terminal area, easily accessible via the free MIA Mover. In addition, several companies operate nearby and offer pick-up services directly from the arrivals area, which can be very convenient after a long flight.
From experience, I always recommend booking your rental car a few days in advance, especially during peak season, to ensure better prices and guarantee the model you want.

6. Ride-Hailing Services: Uber and Lyft from Miami Airport
Another very popular option from Miami Airport is using ride-hailing apps such as Uber or Lyft. In fact, Uber is generally the most widely used option among travellers arriving in Miami.
You simply request a ride through the app, and your driver will pick you up at the designated airport area.
Prices are dynamic, meaning they vary depending on traffic conditions, demand, time of day, and vehicle type. As a general reference, a trip from Miami Airport to Downtown Miami usually costs between $15 and $30.
From my experience, Uber can be a great deal when demand is low, often slightly cheaper than a taxi. However, during peak hours or high demand periods, prices can increase significantly and may even exceed standard taxi fares.
Because of this, I always recommend comparing prices directly in the app before confirming your ride.
How to Use the Easy Card for Public Transport in Miami
If you’re planning to use the bus or Metrorail to travel from Miami Airport to Downtown Miami or Miami Beach, you’ll need the Easy Card, which is Miami’s official public transportation card.
This is a contactless smart card that can be loaded with a balance of up to $150. Using it is very simple: just tap the card on the reader when boarding the bus or entering the metro, and the fare will be automatically deducted.
One of the most useful features is that you can reuse the card as many times as you want, as long as you have sufficient balance.
The Easy Card costs $2 and can be purchased at any Easy Card vending machine, including those located at the Miami Intermodal Center.
At these machines, you can reload your card or purchase different types of travel passes, including daily, weekly, or monthly options.
Top-up amounts range from $10 to $150, and the available passes include:
- 1-day pass: $5.65
- 7-day pass: $29.25
- 1-month pass: $112.50
Another advantage of the Easy Card is that it allows free transfers between buses and metro lines within the first 3 hoursof your journey.
Alternatively, you can also purchase an Easy Ticket, which is a simplified version of the Easy Card made of cardboard. It can be loaded with a 1-day pass, 7-day pass, or up to $40 in cash. The Easy Ticket works in the same way but is only valid for 60 days.
