In this guide, I’ll explain the best ways to get from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca, including bus, taxi, and train options, plus a few tips that would have saved me time on my first visit.
If you’re planning a trip around Malaysia and have a few extra days in Kuala Lumpur, visiting Malacca should absolutely be on your itinerary.
Malacca is one of Malaysia’s must-see destinations. I fell in love with the city’s rich cultural heritage, vibrant atmosphere, and delicious cuisine. It’s absolutely worth a visit.
Located around 150 km south of Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, or Melaka in Malay, is one of Malaysia’s most historic and atmospheric cities. With its colonial architecture, colorful streets, riverside cafés, and multicultural heritage, it feels completely different from the capital.
Because it’s relatively close, many travelers visit Malacca as a day trip from Kuala Lumpur. Personally, though, I think the city deserves more than just a few rushed hours.
Spending one or two nights there gives you time to enjoy the night markets, river walks, and quieter mornings after the tour groups leave.
Thankfully, getting there is easy, and there are several transportation options depending on your budget and travel style.
How to Get from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca (Melaka)
1. Bus, the Best Way to Travel from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca
In my experience, the bus is by far the easiest and most practical way to get from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca.
Buses in Malaysia are comfortable, affordable, and surprisingly efficient. There are departures throughout the day, usually every 30 minutes, so you rarely need to plan too far ahead.
The journey normally takes around 2 hours, depending on traffic, and tickets usually cost between 9 and 15 RM, making it one of the cheapest day trips you can do from Kuala Lumpur.
Another thing I really appreciated is how good the highways are in Malaysia. The roads are modern, smooth, and generally very safe, so the trip is usually very comfortable.
Where to Catch the Bus in Kuala Lumpur
Most buses to Malacca leave from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), Kuala Lumpur’s main long-distance bus terminal.
Getting there is relatively easy from most areas of the city. You can take:
- a Grab or taxi,
- public transport,
- or the train from KL Sentral.
The easiest option is usually heading to KL Sentral first. From there, take either:
- the KTM commuter train, or
- the KLIA Transit train
Both stop at Bandar Tasik Selatan station.
Once you arrive, TBS is directly connected to the station and easy to find thanks to the clear signs. The walk takes around 10 minutes.
Arriving in Malacca
Most buses arrive at Melaka Sentral, the city’s main bus station, located about 4 km from the historical center.
From there, you can either:
- take a taxi or Grab,
- or hop on local bus number 17, which goes to Dutch Square, the heart of the old town.
The journey into the center usually takes around 20 minutes.
A Few Helpful Tips
One thing I you should know is that this route is extremely popular, especially on weekends and holidays. TBS can get very busy, and queues are sometimes longer than expected.
I’d recommend arriving early if you plan to buy your ticket at the station. Even better, book online in advance so you can choose your preferred departure time and avoid unnecessary waiting.
If you’re planning a trip around Malaysia and have a few extra days in Kuala Lumpur, visiting Malacca should absolutely be on your itinerary. After traveling around the country myself, I can honestly say that Melaka was one of the biggest surprises of the trip.
2. Train
Traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca by train is not the most practical option, mainly because Malacca does not have its own railway station.
The closest stop is Pulau Sebang Station, located around 30 kilometers from the city center, which means you will still need to take a taxi or bus to reach Malacca.
The train ends up being slower and less convenient than the bus, especially once you factor in the extra transfer. Unless you specifically enjoy train travel, I would personally skip this option and choose a direct bus instead.
3. Plane
Even though Malacca has its own airport, flying from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca simply does not make much sense due to the very short distance between the two cities. By the time you get to the airport, check in, and wait for your flight, you could already be arriving in Malacca by road.
That said, if you are traveling from another region of Malaysia, domestic flights to Malacca can be a great alternative. They are often reasonably priced and can save you a significant amount of travel time, especially if you are coming from destinations in East Malaysia or the north of the country.
4. Taxi, one of the most comfortable ways to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca
If comfort and convenience are your priorities, taking a taxi is one of the easiest ways to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca. I especially recommend this option for families, small groups, or anyone traveling with young children and heavy luggage.
A one-way journey usually costs between 240 RM and 290 RM, depending on the type of vehicle and the time of day. To avoid overpaying, it is best to ask your hotel to arrange the taxi for you or agree on a fixed fare before starting the trip.
From personal experience, relying on the meter with a street taxi can sometimes lead to an unexpectedly expensive ride.
5. Day Trip to Malacca
Since Kuala Lumpur and Malacca are only around 150 kilometers apart, visiting Malacca as a day trip is incredibly popular, and after doing it myself, I can say it is totally worth it if you are short on time.
The easiest budget-friendly option is to leave early in the morning and travel independently by bus, returning to Kuala Lumpur in the evening. The journey is simple, affordable, and perfect for travelers who prefer exploring at their own pace.
However, if you want a more relaxed experience, joining a guided tour can make the day much easier.
Most tours include hotel pickup, transportation, a local guide who explains the fascinating history of Malacca, and even lunch at a traditional restaurant.
Personally, I think this is a great option for first-time visitors who want to enjoy the city without worrying about logistics.

6. Car Rental, a great way to explore Malacca and Beyond
Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore Malacca if you value freedom and flexibility. It not only makes the journey from Kuala Lumpur easier, but it also allows you to visit attractions outside the city center that are difficult to reach by public transport.
The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca is about 140 kilometers and usually takes around two hours, depending on traffic.
One important tip: if you rent a car, make sure to buy a Touch ‘n Go card at a gas station or convenience store. You will need it to pay tolls on most highways, and having one saves a lot of time during the trip.
Having your own vehicle also gives you the chance to explore some interesting attractions around Malacca, including:
- Melaka Zoo
- Mini ASEAN
- Mini Malaysia
- Geok Hu Keng Temple
- Malacca Botanical Garden
- Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary
- Crocodile Park
If you enjoy road trips and prefer traveling at your own pace, this is easily one of the most rewarding ways to visit the region.
7. Grab
Another convenient way to travel around Malaysia is by using Grab, the most popular ride-hailing app in Southeast Asia. If you have mobile data or access to Wi-Fi, downloading the app is absolutely worth it.
In some cases, you may even find a Grab driver willing to take you from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca for less than the price of a regular taxi. However, from my experience, finding a driver for such a long-distance trip can sometimes take patience.
Many drivers hesitate to accept the ride unless they are confident they can find passengers for the return journey.
Even so, Grab is incredibly useful for getting around Malaysian cities and is something I personally used all the time while traveling in Asia.
One feature I especially liked is that you can connect your credit or debit card directly to the app, which means you do not need to carry cash for every ride.
