I’ve flown into Ciampino several times over the years, and I think it’s a convenient option. One of its biggest advantages is its proximity to the city center. Compared with Fiumicino, you’ll usually enjoy a shorter journey into Rome.
Another major plus is that the airport is well connected to the city through several transportation options.
How to Get from Ciampino Airport to Rome
There are different ways to travel from Ciampino Airport to central Rome: bus, bus + metro, bus + train, taxi, and private transfer. Each option comes with its own advantages, drawbacks, travel times, and costs.
If your priority is saving money, the bus services are usually the best choice. If you value convenience and want to reach your accommodation with minimal hassle, a taxi or private transfer may be worth the extra expense.
The difference in price between the various options can be significant, so it’s worth comparing them before your trip.
Factors such as your arrival time, the location of your hotel, the amount of luggage you’re carrying, and the number of people in your group can all influence which option is best for you.
Below, I’ll explain each alternative in detail, including ticket prices, journey times, important stations, and practical tips to help you choose the most convenient way to reach the heart of Rome.
1. Bus, the Easiest Way to Get from Ciampino Airport to Rome
If you’re looking for the simplest option, taking a bus from Ciampino Airport to central Rome is hard to beat. I’ve used these services several times, and what I like most is that they’re direct, easy to find, and require no transfers. After a flight, that’s often exactly what you need.
The airport is served by several bus companies offering direct connections to the city center.
1.1 Terravision Buses
In my opinion, Terravision is one of the most convenient ways to get from Ciampino to Rome. The buses run directly to Rome Termini, the city’s main station, where you’ll have easy access to the metro, local buses, and regional trains.
A one-way ticket costs 8€, while a return ticket costs €13. Tickets can be purchased at the airport or online for the same price. I always recommend booking in advance, especially during the high season. Children under 5 years old travel free.
The service operates from 08:00 to 23:15, except on Tuesdays when the first departure is at 09:30, and on Wednesdays and weekends when services begin at 08:30.
Buses typically run every 15-30 minutes, although some departures can be spaced up to 1 hour apart. The journey takes around 40 minutes, depending on traffic.

1.2 RomeAirportBus
Another reliable option is RomeAirportBus, which also connects Ciampino Airport with Rome Termini. The trip takes approximately 40 minutes, making it comparable to Terravision in terms of travel time.
A one-way ticket costs 7€ which makes it one of the cheapest direct buses available. Services operate daily from 03:25 until 22:30, a major advantage if you’re arriving on an early flight.

1.3 SIT Bus Shuttle
The SIT Bus Shuttle provides a very similar service to Terravision and is another good choice for travelers heading into the city.
Tickets cost just 6€, making it one of the most affordable direct connections between the airport and Rome. Children under 5 years old travel free.
The journey takes approximately 35-40 minutes, which is slightly faster than some competing services under normal traffic conditions. Departures from Ciampino are currently scheduled at 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, and 15:30.

All of these bus companies depart from stops located just outside the Arrivals Terminal, making them extremely easy to locate, even on your first visit to Rome.
One feature I particularly appreciate is the dedicated luggage compartment, which means you don’t have to keep your suitcase beside your seat.
Another big advantage is that these services operate with no intermediate stops, allowing you to reach central Rome comfortably and without unnecessary delays.

2. Ciampino Airlink (Bus + Train), the Cheapest Way to Reach Rome
If your priority is saving money, the Ciampino Airlink is undoubtedly the option I’d recommend. I’ve used it several times, and while it’s not quite as convenient as a direct bus, the savings can be substantial.
The combined bus + train ticket costs only 2.70€, less than half the price of most airport bus services. Children under 4 years old travel free.
The main drawback is the required transfer. First, you’ll take a local bus from the airport to Ciampino Station, and then continue by train to Rome Termini.
At first glance, this may sound complicated, but in practice it’s actually quite straightforward. The connections are well organized, and I’ve always found the process easy enough, even with luggage.
The Airlink bus departs from a stop located just a few meters from the airport entrance, making it easy to find.
The bus ride to Ciampino Station takes only 10 minutes and operates non-stop. From there, trains run frequently to Rome Termini, located in the very center of the city.
The service operates from 05:55 to 23:30, while on public holidays it runs from 06:55 to 22:30.
One of the biggest advantages is the high frequency of both buses and trains. Even if you miss one connection, the wait is usually very short.

3. Atral Combination (Bus + Metro), Cheap and Ideal if You’re Staying Near Line A
If you’re looking to keep your transportation costs as low as possible, the combination of the Atral bus and the Metro Line A is a very interesting alternative. I’ve used this option before when staying near one of the stations on Line A.
Atral buses connect Ciampino Airport with Anagnina Station, the last stop on Rome’s Metro Line A. The bus journey takes around 20 minutes, and from Anagnina you can reach Termini Station in another 20 minutes by metro.
One of the biggest advantages is the price. The bus ticket costs just 1.20€ and can be purchased directly on board, while the metro ticket costs approximately 1.50€. That means you can reach central Rome for less than 3€ making this one of the most budget-friendly options available.
Buses operate between 08:15 and 22:40 on weekdays. On public holidays, services run from 05:05 to 23:00, although departures are less frequent.
If your hotel or apartment is located close to a stop on Metro Line A, this option can save you both time and money. Another advantage is that it tends to be less crowded than the direct airport buses, so you’ll often find a more relaxed journey.

4. Taxi, the Most Convenient Option
Whenever I arrive in Rome after a long flight or when I’m carrying a lot of luggage, taking a taxi is often the option I consider first. It’s undoubtedly the most convenient way to get from Ciampino Airport to your accommodation.
One of the biggest advantages is that taxis wait directly outside the terminal, so there’s no need to look for bus stops or train stations. You simply get in and head straight to your destination.
The journey to central Rome usually takes between 30 and 40 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
Another major benefit is the door-to-door service. If you’re staying in the historic center, traveling with children, or carrying several suitcases, avoiding public transport can be well worth the extra expense.
Fortunately, taxis from Ciampino operate using a fixed fare, which helps avoid surprises at the end of the ride. The official fare to central Rome is approximately 31€, and the rates are clearly displayed at the taxi rank.

5. Private Transfer, for Those Looking for a Premium Service
If comfort is your top priority, I don’t think there’s a better option than booking a private transfer. It’s the service I usually recommend to families, groups, business travelers, or anyone arriving late at night.
The experience is extremely straightforward. A driver waits for you in the Arrivals Terminal, helps with your luggage, and takes you directly to your hotel in a comfortable vehicle.
Unlike taxis, the price is agreed in advance, so you know exactly what you’ll pay before you travel.
Current prices start at around 73.50€for a 3-passenger vehicle, approximately 100€ for an 8-passenger vehicle, and about 117€for a premium minivan with seating for seven passengers.
Although it’s the most expensive option, it can be surprisingly good value if you’re traveling as a group and can split the cost.
