Getting from Macau International Airport to the city center, Taipa, or Cotai is easy, quick, and very affordable. In fact, you may not even need to pay for transportation: some of Macau’s largest hotels operate free shuttle buses from the airport.
There are several ways to get around, including public buses, hotel shuttle buses, taxis, and the Light Rapid Transit (LRT). The best option depends largely on where you are staying, what time you arrive, and how much luggage you have.
Macau International Airport is located on Taipa Island, just a short distance from Cotai Strip, the glitzy area packed with some of Macau’s most impressive hotels, resorts, and casinos.
The historic heart of Macau, however, lies across the water on the Macau Peninsula. This is where you’ll find many of the city’s main attractions, including the Ruins of St. Paul’s, Senado Square, A-Ma Temple, and Mount Fortress.
So, which option should you choose? For most travelers, a taxi is the easiest and most convenient way to reach your hotel, particularly if it’s your first time in Macau or you’re staying in the historic center.
If you’re traveling on a budget, public buses are the cheapest option, with fares at just MOP 6. They connect the airport with various parts of Macau, including the peninsula, Taipa, and Cotai.
Before paying for any transportation, however, there’s one thing you should check: whether your hotel offers a free airport shuttle. If it does, this is the best option.
Finally, the LRT is a convenient choice if you’re staying in Taipa or Cotai. It’s less useful, however, if your destination is the historic center of the Macau Peninsula, as you’ll likely need to change to another form of transportation to reach your hotel.

All in all, getting from Macau Airport to the city center is easy and hassle-free. The best option largely depends on where you’re staying: if your hotel is in the historic center, a taxi is usually the most convenient choice, while those staying in Taipa or Cotai have more options, including the LRT and free hotel shuttle buses.
How to Get from Macau Airport to the City Center
1. Taxi, the most convenient option
If you have luggage or have just landed after a long flight, taking a taxi is the easiest and most convenient way to get straight to your hotel.
The taxi rank is located just outside the passenger terminal. Official Macau taxis are easy to recognize: they are black with cream-colored roofs.
Fares start at MOP 21 for the first 1.6 km, followed by an additional MOP 2 for every 220 meters. Taxis leaving from the airport also charge an MOP 8 airport surcharge, while luggage placed in the trunk costs MOP 3 per piece.
The final fare therefore depends on how far you’re going, but taxis in Macau are generally quite affordable.
As a rough reference, the drive from Macau Airport to Senado Square is around 8 km, while the journey to Taipa and Cotai is considerably shorter.
The biggest advantage of taking a taxi is the convenience: you can go straight from the airport to your hotel without changing buses or dragging your luggage around looking for the right stop.
2. Public bus, the cheapest option (but not my favorite)
If you’re looking for the cheapest way to get from Macau Airport to the city, the public bus is your best bet. Several routes connect the airport with different parts of Macau, and the fare is just MOP 6.
Some of the most useful routes for travelers are:
- AP1: connects the airport with the Barrier Gate area in the north of the Macau Peninsula.
- MT4: runs from the airport to the Temporary Ferry Terminal and other areas of Macau.
- 26: connects the airport with the Patane area and continues on to Coloane.
- 51A: serves various areas of Taipa and Coloane.
Bus schedules vary by route. For example, the AP1 runs approximately from 6:00 am to 1:20 am, while the MT4 operates from around 6:00 am to 1:00 am.
Personally, though, the public bus wouldn’t be my first choice. Macau has other, considerably more convenient options that are still reasonably priced or even free, if you can use one of the shuttle buses operated by the major hotels.
That said, the bus makes sense if you’re traveling light and want to keep transportation costs to a minimum.
The main drawback is that the bus won’t necessarily take you close to your hotel. Depending on where you’re staying, you may have to walk from the nearest stop or change to another form of transportation.
For this reason, if your hotel is in the city center but not particularly close to a convenient bus stop, taking a taxi may be worth the extra cost.
3. Light Rail Transit (LRT)
Another option is to take the Light Rapid Transit (LRT), Macau’s light rail system.
The airport has its own station, Airport Station, which is directly connected to the passenger terminal via the north exit.
The LRT is particularly useful if you’re staying in Taipa or Cotai, as it provides a convenient way to get around these areas without having to deal with traffic.
However, it’s not the most convenient option if you’re heading to Macau’s historic center. If your hotel is near attractions such as the Ruins of St. Paul’s, Senado Square, or A-Ma Temple, you’ll usually need to switch to another form of transportation to complete the journey.
For that reason, I’d mainly consider the LRT if you’re staying in Taipa or Cotai.
4. Free hotel shuttle buses
If your hotel is served by one of them, the free hotel shuttle is the best way to get from Macau Airport. It’s an option that many first-time visitors don’t even know about.
Several of Macau’s major hotels and resorts operate free shuttle buses connecting their properties with different parts of the city, including the airport.
The free shuttle buses depart from the area next to the north exit of the terminal and, as a general reference, run approximately every 15–20 minutes between 11:00 am and 9:00 pm. Schedules can vary, so it’s worth checking the latest information with your hotel.
The biggest advantage is obvious: they’re completely free.
If you’re staying at one of the major resorts in Cotai, this is an excellent way to get from the airport to your hotel without spending a cent on transportation.
Once you leave the arrivals area, you’ll find clear signs directing you to the parking area where the shuttle buses depart.
I actually used these shuttle buses both to get from the airport to my hotel and to travel from my hotel in Cotai to the city center.
On neither occasion was I asked whether I was staying at the hotel, and I didn’t see anyone checking passengers. So, at least based on my experience, it seems possible to use these buses even if you’re not staying at the hotel.
Keep in mind that these hotels are also huge casinos and shopping complexes, so they have plenty of reasons to bring visitors to their properties.
5. Private airport transfer
If you prefer to have everything arranged in advance, you can also book a private transfer from Macau Airport to your hotel.
This is a particularly convenient option if you’re traveling with a lot of luggage, arriving late, or simply don’t want to worry about finding a taxi or figuring out public transportation after your flight.
Your driver will be waiting for you at the airport and take you directly to your accommodation, with no queues, transfers, or hassle.
