Where to Stay in Koh Samet: Best Areas and Hotels

Where to stay in Koh Samet

Koh Samet is one of the most relaxing getaways from Bangkok. Although the island is small, each beach has its own personality, so choosing the right area to stay in Koh Samet completely changes your experience.

Having visited Koh Samet several times and stayed in various areas, mainly Sai Kaew, Ao Phai, and Ao Wong Duean, I now have a solid understanding of the island.

On my last trip, I stayed at Larissa Samed Resort on Sai Kaew Beach. It’s a great resort with affordable prices, boasting a small private beach and located just a 5-minute walk from Sai Kaew Beach. I would gladly stay there again.

The first thing to consider is that, unless you prefer complete isolation, it’s best to stay in one of the beaches in the northern half of the island. The southern beaches are more remote and offer little more than a few isolated resorts.

Staying in the northern half keeps you close to everything, and if you have a motorbike or don’t mind using public transport (songthaews, which are pickup trucks that function as taxis), you can easily move from one beach to another in just a few minutes.

It’s also important to note that Koh Samet isn’t particularly cheap, especially on weekends when many visitors come from Bangkok. Prices tend to rise, and availability decreases during this time.

Where to stay in Koh Samet: Best Areas and Hotels

1. Sai Kaew Beach, The Most Popular Area to Stay in Koh Samet

Sai Kaew Beach

Sai Kaew is the central hub of Koh Samet. It’s the longest and liveliest beach on the island and offers the most tourist services.

The sand here is white and fine, and depending on the time of day, the water ranges from emerald to turquoise. Not only is it the longest beach, but it’s also the widest.

The atmosphere is vibrant yet still peaceful, perfect for those looking for a bit of energy without chaos. In truth, there’s nowhere on Koh Samet that can be described as hectic. It’s a tranquil island, in stark contrast to places like Phuket or Samui.

Sai Kaew has the highest concentration of restaurants, beach bars, and hotels, offering a variety of activities during the day, such as jet skiing, kayaking, and boat excursions.

At night, Sai Kaew transforms; restaurants illuminate the shoreline, and fire shows occur at several venues. The most renowned, and arguably the best, one is at Ploy Talay restaurant.

Overall, Sai Kaew is the ideal place for those who want convenience and a touch of nightlife.

It’s the area where I’ve stayed most often, and I have never been disappointed.

Accommodation options here are the most varied on the island, ranging from budget stays to mid-range hotels and more upscale resorts.

2. Ao Phai, A Great Beach with Nature, Atmosphere, and a Prime Location

Ao Phai, Koh Samet

Ao Phai is just a short walk from Sai Kaew beach. Though it’s smaller, this beach is surrounded by lush greenery, and the water is crystal clear when the weather permits.

Despite recent development, Ao Phai remains a peaceful spot—like much of the island—enhanced by a few additional hotels and bars.

It’s an ideal beach for leisurely days spent swimming, strolling, and enjoying lunch at one of the quaint beachfront restaurants.

Staying in Ao Phai offers the perfect balance of tranquility and a light, laid-back day- and nighttime vibe, with the added convenience of being within easy reach of Sai Kaew.

Most accommodations here are bungalows or small resorts nestled within the vegetation, generally offering mid-range or budget-friendly options.

3. Ao Chor, Where To Stay In Koh Samet For A Quiet Stay

Ao Chor, Koh Samet

Ao Chor is one of the quietest and most pleasant coves on Koh Samet. It is not known for its social scene but rather for its serenity.

The gently curved bay keeps the water exceptionally calm, making it ideal for children or anyone who just wants to float without worrying about waves.

The combination of light sand, clear water, and small rocky formations gives Ao Chor a unique charm. Trees provide natural shade, which is always welcome on hot days.

You will find only a handful of resorts and a few restaurants, just enough to meet daily needs, meaning that few visitors come here unless they are staying in the area.

Ao Chor is only a few minutes away by motorbike from Sai Kaew or Ao Phai, offering a perfect blend of peace and easy access to livelier spots.

4. Ao Wong Duean, The Perfect Balance Between Atmosphere and Beauty

Ao Wong Duean

Ao Wong Duean is a beautiful crescent-shaped bay known for its charming atmosphere. The beach is narrow yet pleasant, featuring white sand and calm waters that invite visitors to enjoy long hours of swimming or relaxing in the shade.

Similar to Ao Chor, much of the beach area is shaded by trees, and the beachfront is lined with hotels, restaurants, and bars. While it has some lively spots, the ambiance is much more tranquil compared to Sai Kaew.

The beach provides all the essentials for a comfortable day, including waterfront restaurants, cozy bars, and a range of accommodations nestled within the lush greenery.

At high tide, the beach narrows, and sun loungers are positioned close to the water, some even touching it, creating a unique and relaxing atmosphere.

This beach has become one of my favorites in Koh Samet. Its charm, good services, and laid-back vibe make it a perfect place to stay for several days.

I visited Ao Wong Duean on a trip where I was seeking complete disconnection, and I would gladly return. I love its laid-back atmosphere, with plenty of restaurants and a couple of bars to give the area a pleasant touch of life.

The only downside is that hotel availability is limited; however, the options available are usually comfortable and reasonably priced.

5. Ao Prao, Exclusivity, Silence, and Unforgettable Sunsets

Best places to stay in Koh Samet: Ao Prao

Ao Prao is the most exclusive beach in Koh Samet, located on the west coast. It is the only area on that side of the island with accommodation.

Its unique location, framed by verdant hills and offering unforgettable sunsets, makes it an outstanding option for travelers seeking exclusivity, provided it fits within their budget.

The bay is small, framed by green hills, and the calm waters create a serene swimming experience when the weather is pleasant.

There is no nightlife here; the focus is on peace, comfort, and the stunning scenery. The sunsets are one of its greatest treasures.

Hotels in Ao Prao are high-end, with no budget or mid-range options available. They cater to travelers seeking relaxation, exclusivity, and personalized service.

6. Na Dan, Where To Stay in Koh Samet On A Budget

Where to stay in Koh Samet: Na Dan

Na Dan is the town where ferries from the mainland dock. Though it’s not a beach destination, it’s very convenient for budget-conscious travelers, as it’s the most affordable area on Koh Samet.

This small town is filled with cafés, local restaurants, shops, massage parlors, and various services.

One of its biggest advantages is its proximity to Sai Kaew Beach; you can enjoy the beach without the higher accommodation prices associated with staying there.

If you’re on a budget, Na Dan is a smart choice. It may lack the scenic beauty of the beaches, but it’s practical and conveniently located.

7. Ao Noi Na, A Peaceful and Affordable Accommodation Option

Noi Na Beach, Koh Samet

Ao Noi Na is located in the northern part of the island. Although the beach may not be as visually stunning as others, it features fine white sand and clean waters when the weather is calm, along with views of the mainland.

Despite being less touristy, Ao Noi Na offers reasonably priced accommodation options that provide good value for money.

Even if it’s not one of the island’s most spectacular beaches, it can be a good base if you plan to explore by motorbike, since it’s only a five-minute ride from Sai Kaew and other more picturesque spots.
